Mr. Columbus SandersColumbus Sanders was born on February 9, 1936, in Lowndes County Alabama to the late John Sanders and Eliza Sanders Hunter. When he was still a young child, his family relocated to Birmingham, AL where he attended Cameron Elementary on the city’s south side. There he excelled academically, all while being guided by his eldest brother, William. He graduated from Ullman High School where he met the love of his life, Olivia Harris Sanders, whom he affectionately called “Libby”. Both would go on to attend Miles College, though Columbus paused his studies to serve in the Air Force, where he was part of the military police, the drill team, and the intramural baseball team.

After his military service, his talent for baseball earned him a position with the Cleveland Indians’ minor league team, which took him across the country showcasing his athletic skills. Eventually he returned to Birmingham and to Olivia, and the two were soon married. Among other pursuits, he and Olivia were prolific bowlers. Together, they won many trophies and titles. Their union flourished for fifty-six years, until her passing.

Ambition led Columbus to work in various fields including positions with, the U.S. Postal Service, the Internal Revenue Service, and real estate ventures. He graduated from Booker T. Washington Business College. Later, he would obtain a business degree from Athens State University, which sparked his most successful venture: Consolidated Industries, Inc. His leadership there earned him the title of Small Businessman of the Year. Columbus was also a dedicated public servant, working on   several boards. The most distinguished being the Federal Reserve Board.

Known for his sharp intellect, quick wit, and vast knowledge of politics, history and world events, Columbus was a master conversationalist. More than just a man of words, he was also a man of action. Unknown to many were the numerous philanthropic efforts he contributed to his community. A keen discernment of character allowed him to connect with people from all walks of life, from the common man to governors, and U. S. Presidents alike.

A true outdoorsman, Columbus was an avid hunter. No deer, wild turkey, or wild boar was safe when he was on the hunt.  He hosted an annual wild game breakfast every New Year’s Day, an event eagerly anticipated by family and friends. He was affiliated with several organizations, including the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the 100 Black Men of Greater Huntsville, and “The Boys.”

Columbus leaves to cherish his legacy, three children: Carlton, Monica, and W. Patrick (Melinda); four grandchildren: Shanika (Zettler IV), Shandra, Jordyn, and William; seven great-grandchildren: Cassidy, Kaidanse, Zettler V, Alivia, Riley, Nia, and Tyson; three sisters: Queen Muldrow (Clifford), Minnie Lundy and Loretta Conley (Roosevelt); and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 14, 2024 at The Fellowship of Faith Church (3703 North Memorial Pkwy NW, Huntsville, AL 35810) with Pastor Marcus Lundy officiating. Interment will be in the Meadowlawn Garden of Peace. Mr. Sanders will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Delta Theta Lambda Chapter Omega service will be 6:30 p.m., Friday, September 13, 2024.

The Sanders family will greet guests from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, September 13, 2024 at the Royal Chapel of Memories.

Public viewing will be held from 1:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Friday, September 13, 2024 and 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m., Saturday, September 14, 2024 at the Royal Funeral Home.
