Colbert Fossil Plant TUSCUMBIA  — The Tennessee Valley Authority is planning to use a string of controlled demolition charges to safely implode the six smokestacks and other structures at the Colbert Fossil Plant on Wednesday, August 25. TVA is coordinating with local emergency management and wants the public to be aware so you are not alarmed if you hear the explosion or see the smokestacks fall.

Between the hours of 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. CT., river traffic will be restricted near the plant and traffic controls will be in place along Highway 72.  There is no public access on TVA property to view the implosion.

The implosion is the next step in TVA’s $43 million demolition initiative to clear the site for cleaner energy. In July, TVA announced it will invest $500 million to add to the existing natural gas power-generating units that are also located on the Colbert 1,300-acre reservation.  Over the next four years, TVA is investing over $2 billion in transmission system improvements across its seven-state service area to build the energy system of the future that will continue to provide, clean, low cost, reliable power.
