MONTGOMERY— Governor Robert Bentley announced a $199,860 Appalachian Regional Commission grant to give Alabama teachers the training they need to help students excel in the classroom and prepare for successful futures.
The grant to A+ Education Partnership will help to expand the Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Program in Colbert, Franklin, Randolph and Talladega counties. The program will provide comprehensive teacher training and professional development for 80 teachers.
“Advanced Placement courses prepare students for success in college or
career,” Bentley said. “Preparing teachers to teach Advanced Placement courses presents greater opportunities for them and their students. This grant for teacher training will give school systems in Colbert, Franklin, Randolph and Talladega counties the chance to elevate their education offerings to students.”
The program provides seven days of teacher training for Advance Placement teachers and four days for Pre-Advanced Placement Teachers. The training will enable high schools to offer more AP courses and better prepare students to take and pass AP exams. Matching funds of $85,870 will supplement the grant.
Congress established the ARC in 1965 as a supplemental grant program to raise the standard of living, improve the quality of life and promote economic development in the Appalachian mountain region, which includes 37 Alabama counties.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs administers the ARC program in Alabama along with a wide range of other programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
