Claude Crews – Obituary

Mr. Claude Levoy Crews, age 93, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 20, 2013 having passed away at Maury Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Crews was born on September 2, 1920 in Napier, Tennessee to the late George Crews and the late Rosa Lee Dodson Crews. He was the oldest of nine children born to his parents and survived all his siblings except one. He was married to Evelyn Crews for 68 years, she also preceded him in death. He supported his family by working as a foreman and supervisor at Occidental Chemical Company for many years.

Claude was known in the community as a faithful Christian man, having donated the land to build the Sandy Hook Church of Christ, where he worshipped for many years. He was a “part-time” preacher for Church of Christ congregations, have served at several locations throughout the years. He was currently a member at Northview Church of Christ in Columbia.

Additionally, he was a beloved baseball coach for the Sandy Hook Colt League, Mt. Pleasant little league and Columbia Babe Ruth. He loved watching sports, especially, the Atlanta Braves. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He loved spending time with his family. Playing cards was one of his most favorite things to do with those he loved.

claudeMr. Claude Crews is survived by his sister and her husband: Kitty and Bill Chaffin; his son: Mickey Crews; son and daughter-in-law: Raymond and Kerry Crews; son and daughter-in-law: Dale and Pat Crews; daughter-in-law: Diane Crews; granddaughter: Jana (Jim) Infield; granddaughter: Lana (Jonathan) Russell; grandson: Mario and Melissa Crews; granddaughter: Amy and Sam Chitty; grandson: Adam and Jamie Crews; grandson: Jason Crews; granddaughter: Heather Crews; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Crews will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Northview Church of Christ on Nashville Highway, in Columbia. Ralph Gilmore and Wayne Hardison will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Polk Memorial Gardens.
The family will visit with friends on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.

Mario Crews, Adam Crews, Jason Crews, Phillip Crews, Denton Crews, Bill Chaffin, Eddie Bassham and Dino Bassham will serve as pallbearers. Former Sandy Hook baseball players, retired Occidental Chemical Company Employees and Elders and Deacons of Northview Church of Christ will serve as honorary pallbearers.
