The celebration of life service for Clarence Lee Coon, Jr. will be held on January 6, 2018 at First United Methodist Church in Hartselle, Alabama. Visitation will be held at 10:00 am at the church with the service following at 11:00 am. Interment will be Sunday at 10:00 am at The American Heritage Cemetery in Montgomery, Alabama.
Mr. Coon died on Wednesday, January 3, 2018. He was born October 26, 1924 in Hammond, Louisiana. He was the oldest of four children born to Clarence Lee Coon and Mary Mitchell Coon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, Jesse Coon and Fred Coon, and his sister, Grace Coon Adams, his first wife, Ida Sellers Coon, and a daughter, Cindy Coon. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth “Mitch” Coon, daughters, Leslie Wier (Bo), Cissy Lakin (Terry),
Mary Ellen Friedrich (Mark), son Lee Coon (Judy), daughters Lisa Baxter (Howard), Arthur George Howell III, Amy Bell (Ray). He also leaves 17 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Coon graduated from Drew (MS) high school and started college at Mississippi State University in Starkville, MS during the summer of 1942 and attended there until Spring, 1943. He joined the U.S. Army and served in the Army Air Corps and reached the rank of sergeant while serving as Flight Engineer in the 2nd Emergency Rescue Squadron in the South Pacific. He served in the Army until January, 1946 and returned to MSU to finish his degree in Agribusiness. Mr. Coon spent his career working in different facets of agricultural management.
The family wishes to give special thanks to the staff at Falkville Healthcare Center for their kindness and outstanding care.
Pallbearers will be David Lakin, Ryan Lakin, David Wier, Colin Wier, Jackson Bell, Spencer Bell, Howard Baxter, Seth Baxter.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to The Good Samaritan Fund at First United Methodist Church, 210 Hickory Street SE, Hartselle, AL 35640
