Clarence Henry Holmes, Jr., 90, of Pell City, Alabama died Thursday, November 16, 2023, in Pell City, Alabama.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Sandra Holmes; son, Donald (Don) Holmes of Littleville, AL; and daughter, Wanda Holmes of Pell City, AL.
Clarence Holmes is also survived by three grandchildren; Matthew Holmes of Gardendale, AL; Brodie Holmes of Killen, AL; and Lilly Holmes of Birmingham, AL.
Mr. Holmes served in the US Army from 1954-1956, spending most of his tour of duty in Kaiserslautern, Germany. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Tennessee Tech, and returned to Huntsville, AL before finally relocating to Birmingham, AL in 1973.
Clarence retired from Rust Engineering, which later became Raytheon Corp, in 2000 after 27 years of service. Baiting countless fishing hooks and removing an also countless number of fish for his grandchildren at his home on Lake Logan Martin were activities at the top of his retirement to-do list.
Swimming off his pier, driving his boat much slower than his tubing grandchildren requested, and traveling to Auburn football games were also high on his list of favorites things. Clarence Holmes was the husband/father we all wish for in life. He was always there, always available to help in any way possible, and always ready with encouragement. Our father was part of the greatest generation of Americans, and he will be greatly missed by all of us.
Clarence H. Holmes, Jr will be remembered at a Memorial service on December 16, 2023 at Elkins East Chapel in Killen, AL. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 1:00, with the memorial service following from 1:00 to 1:30. A luncheon in his honor will follow from 1:30 to 3:30 at Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club in Killen, AL.
