ATHENS โ The City of Athens is overjoyed to announce its widespread support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as multiple departments aim to transform the city into a sea of pink in a colorful-campaign dubbed “Pinktober.”
The goal of this initiative is for all residents to wear pink every Friday in the month of October to raise awareness, support those affected and encourage early detection with routine checkups toย make a significant difference in the fight against breast cancer.
Leading the charge, the City of Athens Relay for Life Team will be wearing pink every Friday throughout October. This is just one of many ways the city is demonstrating its support to the cause.
The Athens Police Department has swapped out their traditional silver badges for pink ones for the month of October. Their
officers are also thrilled to bring back out the fan-favorite pink patrol car. They will be taking it to various events throughout the month to spread awareness and to show the community how much they really care.
According to Chief Anthony Pressnell, this visible show of solidarity is a reminder to the community about the importance of Breast Cancer Awareness.
“Breast cancer affects so many lives, and it’s crucial that we come together to support those battling this disease, as well as their families and loved ones,โ Pressnell said. โAt APD, we’re committed to being part of this effort, not just during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but all year round. Through our pink badges and our pink patrol car, we’ll be visible reminders of our commitment to this cause.โ
Adding to the city-wide effort, Athens Fire and Rescue sold limited edition Breast Cancer Awareness shirts. Proceeds from those sales directly benefited the Stacy Wolfe Breast Cancer Foundation, which seeks to support, encourage and meet the immediate needs for cancer patients and their families.
“Weโve had city employees whoโve fought it. And I know there have been many members of our community who have been
impacted by breast cancer, from personally fighting it to having a friend or loved one whoโs fought it,โ said City of Athens Relay for Life Team Captain Holly Hollman. “Thatโs why itโs important to put emphasis on this cause so that women feel empowered to get the mammograms, do the self checks and stay on top of their health.โ
The City of Athens invites everyone to come together to make ‘Pinktober’ a powerful statement of hope and commitment. We encourage all our residents to join us in showing our support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, whether by wearing pink on Fridays or simply spreading awareness about the importance of early detection.
