ATHENS-An Athens employee helped get a teenage boy out of a burning home this morning (Wednesday, June 5), according to Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson.
He said building inspector Clifton Kirby, who also serves as a reserve police officer for Athens, was traveling on Nick Davis Road when he saw a garage on fire in the 23000 block at 9:50 a.m.
Kirby knocked on the door and couldn’t get anyone to answer. Athens Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal James Hand said the teenager boy was in the home’s basement. The teen said he was asleep when Kirby knocked out a window. Kirby was able to get him out safely.
Hand said no one was injured, but the home is a total loss. At noon, firefighters were still putting out hot spots. The cause is under investigation.
