SHEFFIELD-Young anglers can reel-in prizes and a chance to win college scholarships during an upcoming fishing rodeo in Sheffield.
A Crappie Kids Fishing Rode, for children 12 and younger, is 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 25 at Riverfront Park in Sheffield. Registration begins at 8 a.m. There is no charge to enter. The children can use live bait and fish for all species of fish. Children must be accompanied by an adult and have their own fishing tackle.
“The Crappie Kids Fishing Rodeos are lots of fun for the young anglers,” said Susann Hamlin, executive director of Colbert County Tourism and Convention Bureau. “It’s a great opportunity for the children to learn about the outdoors and spend time with their family. Plus, they could win a scholarship that will help pay for college.”
Prizes will be awarded to the top anglers. Lunch will be provided. All participants will be entered into a drawing for college scholarships that will be awarded in the fall of 2015.
The kid’s fishing rodeo is being held in conjunction with a Cabela’s Crappie USA tournament on Pickwick and Wilson lakes April 24-25. Many of the nation’s top crappie anglers are competing in the tournament. Weigh-ins begin at 3 p.m. both days at Riverfront Park.
Sheffield Mayor Ian Sanford said the tournament helps showcase the city and the phenomenal crappie fishing Pickwick and Wilson lakes provide. In addition, the anglers, who will be staying in hotels, eating at restaurants, buying gas and other supplies, provide a boost to Sheffield’s economy.
