Chessie L. Harwell of Harvest passed away Monday, November 4, in Athens. She was 89 years old.
Mrs. Harwell was born and raised in Owensboro, Kentucky, and graduated Owensboro High School in 1953. She received an associate’s degree from Bowling Green Business College (now part of Western Kentucky University) and later moved to Nashville where she met and married David Harwell in 1957. The Harwells moved to Huntsville in 1960.
She worked as a secretary for a number of government contractors and at the time of her retirement was employed by Science Applications (SAIC), but her primary interest was always her family. She worked tirelessly to bring her sons up as godly young men and was enormously proud of them all. She was a wonderful seamstress and made clothes for the entire family, and also for her grandchildren when they came along. After she and David retired, they did some travelling and spent a great deal of time attending athletic events in which their grandchildren took part. She was a friend to all and a pleasure to be around, even after being confined to a nursing home.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, David Harwell; three sons, Jack (Linda), Paul (Debbie) and Jeff (Tanya); five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many friends and admirers.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 9, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home in Huntsville. Visitation will begin at 12:30, followed by the funeral service at 2:00. Interment will be at Huntsville Memory Gardens.
