Charlotte Faye Williams Overstreet was born in Moultrie, Georgia on September 19, 1938, and met Jesus on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. She was the daughter of Carey Broughton and Mary Dell Kelly Williams. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, C. Broughton Williams, Jr., his wife, Alma, Ray Kelly Williams and her niece, Mary Jeanette Williams. Charlotte is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Wynton Rex Overstreet; her daughters, Kimberly Jayne Overstreet Mauldin (Macke), and Paige Alise Overstreet, and her grandchildren, Hallie Preuit Mauldin, Macke Buchanan “Hanan” Mauldin, Jr., and Parker Morales Overstreet. Charlotte is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Eleanor Jones Williams and Gail Bigham Williams; nieces, Cathy Williams Agee (Jim) and Casey Orlando Bodiford (Stephen); nephews, Carey Broughton “Bo” Williams, III; Ray Kelly Williams, Jr. (Kristen); Clayton Chandler Williams (Carla); and five great-nieces and three great-nephews.
Charlotte graduated from Colquitt County High School in Moultrie, Georgia, in 1956 and crowned Miss Moultrie in 1959. She graduated from Auburn University in 1960 with a B.S. in Elementary Education and was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority and was the sweetheart of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. While attending Auburn, her brother, Broughton, set her up with Wynton. Their first date was the Auburn-Georgia football game in Columbus, Georgia in the fall of 1958. Wynton became the love of her life, and they married on July 9, 1960. They first lived in Kinston, North Carolina, where Charlotte taught first grade before her children were born. They moved to Hendersonville, Tennessee in 1963.
Charlotte loved Jesus, Wynton and her family. She had a deep and abiding faith that showed in everything she did. She was a member of First Baptist Church Hendersonville for 60 years where she was a Sunday School teacher for 40 years and a member of WMU (treasurer). For 30 years she enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels. She was a member of several Bible studies throughout her lifetime.
Charlotte never met a stranger. She loved children and babies; really, she loved everyone. She was the “Prayer Warrior” for her family and friends. If anyone needed prayer, we let Charlotte know and she went to work.
As her grandchildren were born, she became affectionally known as Grammy. She cherished being with them and teaching them how to talk. She was, and is still, a guiding Christian, loving influence in their lives. She was a great cook and loved doing it. Her specialty, and her grandchildren’s favorite, was fried chicken with rice and gravy coupled with more vegetables than we knew existed. There were several Charlotteisms; she had a candy drawer at her house as well as a candy bag for the road; there was never a laundry stack: if it was dirty, it got washed; “everyone you meet is going to know you or know of you.” Her grandchildren loved making Christmas cookies with her. She may be with Jesus now, but her loving spirit is an inspiration that will be with us always.
Her family is grateful for the love and care she received from everyone at Maple Cottage, especially Kim, Joi, Rachel, and Cynthia.
