Mr. Charles Waymon Smith, age 76, died Friday evening, April 12 at AHC McNairy County Health Care Center in Selmer, TN.
He was born in Henderson, TN on October 16, 1947, son of the late Jerry Paul and Phyllis Inetha Conder Smith. He grew up in Henderson and attended Chester County schools.
He married Bonnie Parrish prior to enlisting in the TN Army National Guard in 1965. He served in the Guard for six years. He and Bonnie made their home in Henderson. Bonnie preceded him in death in 2014.
In his early years, he worked for the Bemis Cotton Mill, until he began a career working for several box manufacturing plants, the last of which was Ruskin in Jackson, TN from which he retired in 2016.
He married Joanna Azure on December 6, 2014. He attended church with her at Luray Baptist Church.
He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting all manner of wild game, but especially coon hunting. He was also a fan of UT Volunteers football. He enjoyed country music and was also an accomplished dancer. He enjoyed ballroom dancing and line dancing.
Charles was a tinkerer, always fixing things.
He is survived by his wife Joanna Smith of Henderson; a son Terry Smith (Diana) of Henderson; three stepsons Joshua Barnes (Whitley Rose) and Joseph Barnes (Chelsey) both of Luray and Dakota Barnes (Kristen) of Lexington; 12 grandchildren Nick Hearn (Heather), Drew Smith (Daela), Shannon McCaskill (Tyler), Jackson Hatchett, Hadley, Oakley, Bearett, Kinley, Lyla and Ellie Barnes, Hallie and Hudson Holder; 8 great grandchildren Cooper, Luke, Tucker, Nevaeh, Laini, Keylee, Zoey and Grayson; a brother Freddy Smith of Jackson; two sisters Mary Howell and Betty Stout both of Henderson.
In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by brothers, Frankie and Don Smith and a sister, Paulette Whitman and a daughter Cherry Ann Smith.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, April 18, 2024 at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Crook Avenue Chapel with burial to follow in Pisgah Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Crook Avenue Chapel on Wednesday, April 17 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
