Charles Howard Lamon “Sam” passed away peacefully on Monday August 26th, 2024, surrounded by his family. Charles is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Judy Paden Lamon; and his children, Jeffrey Howard Lamon and Suzanne Lamon Browning (Jerry); sisters, Cathy Lamon Crosswhite and Debra Elaine Lamon; and his four granddaughters, Paden Browning Majure (Christopher), Allyn Elizabeth Browning, Alexia ‘Lexi’ Faith Lamon, and Madison Grace Lamon. He is also survived by his niece, Susan Crosswhite Coke (Frankie); great-nephew, Blake Barber (Morgan); great-niece, Lauren Luedtke (Alex); and his beloved great-great-nephews, Owen, Luke and Ryan Barber, and great-great-niece, Lawson Luedtke.
Charles was born on September 27, 1946, to Marlin and Lorene Lamon of Jefferson County. Directly after proudly graduating from Deshler High School at the age of 18, Charles joined the Army National Guard. He was enrolled from February 1964 and retired as Command Sergeant Major in September of 2006. Charles received several awards for his service in the Alabama National Guard. Those awards include Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Defense Service Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, and Presidential Unit Citation. He served in many units: 167 Theater Support Command, Joint Force Headquarters- Homeland Security, 122 Corp Support Group, Headquarters 115 Signal Battalion, Company A 155 Signal Battalion, and Company B 115 Signal Battalion.
During his career, he worked for Southern Bell Telephone Company, completed the IBEW Apprenticeship Program, worked as an electrician at the Ford Motor Company, served Ford Motor Company as the UAW Bargain Chairman, Retired Command Sergeant Major in the Alabama National Guard, and ended his career at the IBEW 558 as Assistant Business Agent in which he retired in 2016.
Charles was an active member in the Tuscumbia community serving on the Tuscumbia City Council, coaching Jeff and Suzy’s ball teams, and the DHS Quarterback Club. Since his retirement, Charles enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling across the US with his wife and sisters, and loved the beach. He was a man of faith and family. He was known to many of his granddaughters’ friends as “Papa” and him and Judy never missed a sporting event, graduation, or special occasion. The family would like to sincerely thank all of Charles’s nurses at Helen Keller Hospital, Dr. Heaton and his staff, Dr. Adam Isbell and his staff, and the staff at Davita Dialysis of Sheffield.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 29, from noon until 2:00 p.m. at First Methodist Church of Tuscumbia. The service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Alan Beasley and Barrett Long officiating. Interment will be in Colbert Memorial Gardens.
