Carroll David Johnson, 86, of Huntsville, passed away Tuesday. He was born to Hilda Carolina Christina Sampson and Herman David Johnson in Topeka, KS. He leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Lois LaRhue Douglass Johnson; three children, Carroll David Johnson Jr. of Corpus Christi, TX, Linda LaRhue Johnson Bolt (Andrew) of Hendersonville, TN, and Benjamin Douglass Johnson of Pike Road, AL; and grandchildren, Christopher Andrew Bolt, Michael Charles Bolt, Michelle Bolt Mathis, Kennedy Grace Johnson, and Benjamin Connor Johnson.
Carroll was a University professor all his professional life. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in Mechanical Engineering in Knoxville, TN in 1956 and was on the faculty at UT while studying for his master’s degree. Carroll returned to Memphis to teach at Christian Brothers College for two years. He earned a National Science Foundation Fellowship and went on to Purdue University to study for his PhD. He graduated from Purdue in 1963 and came to Huntsville to begin his long career at UAH of teaching young men and women to become engineers. At the time, UAH was only one building (Morton Hall), and only graduate school was taught. Carroll taught many of the young men and women working on Redstone Arsenal. In addition to his being a professor at UAH, he did consulting work with NASA, the Army and various other organizations.
He earned the honor of distinguished professor at UAH and retired after 50 years at University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2013.
Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, April 16th at First Presbyterian Church. The funeral will follow at the church with the Rev. Tara Bulger officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
