Carole Howard Chase, 88, of Huntsville, passed away March 27, 2025. An only child, Carole was born in Newark, New Jersey. She attended Douglass College (Women’s Division of Rutgers University) and graduated with a BS and then an MA in Elementary Education.
In 1958, she married Robert E. Howard, who predeceased her in 1997. Together, they had two children. During this period she taught 4th and 5th grade.
After moving to Manchester, CT in 1966, she served as president of the Newcomer’s Club, taught 5th and 6th grade English and Reading, directed musicals for over 100 students, and was the Elementary teacher representative to the Superintendent’s Curriculum Council.
In 1979, she moved to Huntsville, AL where she taught 5th and 6th grade English and Speech, and was the Chairman of the Speech Department of Randolph School. Throughout the 80s and 90s she continued the teaching of multiple Speech and English classes. In 1992, Carole directed “Velveteen Rabbit” with Fantasy Playhouse in Huntsville.
In 1999, she served as Director of Alumni Relations at Randolph School. She also coached over 12 beauty and scholarship contests, with many winning state contests and placing in national contests.
After retiring from Randolph, Carole became very involved in the mission of the Christian Women’s Job Corp, an organization dedicated to equipping individuals with life and career skills.
Awards include Most Outstanding Educator, Optimist Club; Martha Washington Medal, Sons of American Revolution; Outstanding Faculty Award, Randolph School; Who’s Who in America’s Teacher, American Legion Outstanding Educator; and VFW Voice of Democracy Outstanding Service to Youth. Carole was twice secretary for Alpha Delta Kappa, and a member of the Huntsville Literary Association Executive Board and the Advisory Council. She enjoyed tennis, traveling, reading, swimming, and theatre.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, John B. E. Chase, and her son, Jeffrey Ernest Howard. Carole is survived by her daughter, Heather Wynn Lindsey.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home with the Rev. Coy Hallmark officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
