The Rev. Carlton (C.D.) Hamilton passed away Monday, March 17, 2014 at home, peacefully, with his family.
Visitation will be Friday, March 21, 2014, from 6-8 p.m., at Thompson and Son Funeral Home, Tuscumbia, AL.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 22, 2014, 1:00pm, Russellville High School Auditorium, Russellville, AL
Rev. Rickey Houston officiating.
Burial will be in the Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Russellville, AL
Public viewing will be Friday, 9:00am-8:00pm at the funeral home.
The Rev. C.D. Hamilton was a devoted Baptist Minister, Civil Rights Activist, and a Community Leader. He was a servant of God who preached the gospel for over 50 years. Reverend Hamilton was Pastor of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. He graduated from Florence State College. He received his Theology Degree from Selma University. While in Selma, this Giant of a Man took a leadership role to labor diligently in the Civil Rights Movement, working hand in hand with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to marching out front on Bloody Sunday in Selma which led to the passage of the Voters Right Act. He directed the Selma University-Off-site campus where he taught many ministers. As the Immediate Past President of the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee he worked with Past President Robert Potts for students to receive Academic Scholarships to attend UNA. Other community services included Masonic Lodge Ensley Rising Star #47, Worthy Patron of the O.E.S. Golden Chapter #16, , and Vice President of the Tri-County Branch NAACP Committee. He loved gardening, making preserves and jellies, watching sports and coaching various athletic teams. Additional hobbies included participation in the Zeta Male Network and the Man to Man American Cancer Society meetings.
He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Sheryl Leggs Hamilton; one daughter, Carla Hamilton of Huntsville, AL and three sons, Carlton Hamilton II (Regina) of Collierville, Tennessee; Carlos Dewayne Hamilton of Muscle Shoals, AL; and Darryl Hamilton of Tuscumbia, AL; one brother, Cliff Hamilton; two sisters, Annie Johnson and Margaret Sharpley; five grandchildren, LaKeshia Hamilton, Carlton Delano Hamilton III, Kennedi Hamilton, Carlos Hamilton, and Christian Hamilton. One great-grand son, Kaden Morgan. Host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
