MUSCLE SHOALS-Noted Tuscumbia historian and tour leader Joel Mize will lead a road convoy of historic Byler Road (authorized by Alabama’s first Legislature in 1819).
The “Late Summer-Segment Tour” will take place on Saturday, 15 September. The assembly point will be at Publix on Woodward Avenue at 6th Street by 8:00 a.m. for Shoals convoy participants.
The convoy’s southern-segment journey will join other convoy group participants from Haleyville, Jasper, Double Springs, Hamilton and Tuscaloosa at Natural Bridge, Old Restaurant (Hwy 278 & Alabama Hwy 5 two hours later (10:00a.m.)
Some key historic stops will include: Glen Mary Yard & Rock Art Extravaganza; a historic marker on Co. Rd 9; Farris’ Stage Hub at Old Larissa; Eldridge (Mallard’s) Toll Booth; Old Stagecoach Road through ghost town in Dublin AL. Additional tour stop points will include Boone Cemetery, North River Plantation of arguably Alabama’s richest family and Road sponsor that John Prewitt in 1820-1865 period; a late lunch at Northport Café, Warrior River Falls; Alabama’s first major State Capitol Building ruins, etc. Bring your snacks and water bottles.
