Butterflies … Flutterby

397126_3204421670798_325191046_nAren’t butterflies cute and pretty? Watching butterflies in the garden is always fun and relaxing. While watching ponder just a few really strange Butterfly facts….

We taste with our tongue….but did butterflies with their feet.  Yep that is the way they do it walk around on that flower, brick shinny windchime and taste the taste.

attacked by bats, their wings have ears on them. The better to hear you with.

While flowers come in many colors from pink to blue and even orange…. butterflies are capable of identifying only three colors. They are red, green, and yellow.

If the body temperature of the butterfly goes below 86 degrees, they cannot fly.

We eat with our mouth, but butterflies do not  have  a mouth. So I guess you are wondering….just how do they eat?  They have proboscis, which looks a long straw they use to suck nectar.

A species of moth called the atlas moth is said to be the largest among silk moths. Sometimes they have even mistake for a small-sized bat.

Butterflies have lots of color in their wings and they are awesomely beautiful to see. If you have been thinking that this color is due to pigments….wrong. Butterflies have transparent wings and when light is passed through these wings, light gets reflected and you see many beautiful colors in their wings.

Butterflies generally suck nectar from flowers that have a single petal and are in colors like red, purple, yellow, and pink.

Did you know….The female Queen Alexandra butterflies are the largest butterflies as the size of their wing is nearly 26 cm. You can find them in Papua New Guinea.
