Derek Burt
COLBERT COUNTY-Derek Burt who was charged with capital murder for the 2008 shooting death of Harry Ricks pleaded guilty to the charges.
Burt was originally charged with five counts of capital murder. He’s accused of shooting and killing Harry Ricks in Colbert County during a home invasion in 2008.
In November 2008, three men armed with guns entered Ricks’ home and tied up the family of three. Harry Ricks was able to free himself and as he tried to escape he was shot in the head. DNA evidence linked Burt to the scene of the crime.
After his plea of guilty to the Capital Murder charge, which came on the first day of his trial, he and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
