Burl L. Smith, 75, of Bismarck passed away at 11:44 p.m. on Monday, September 29, 2014, at his home. He was born September 24, 1939, in Morgan County to Ty C. and Marie Boger Smith. He married Evelyn Jacobsen on September 5, 1959 in Birmingham. She survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Kerry Smith of Perrysville, IN, Brian (Mandy) Smith of Elgin, IA, and Christopher(Susie) Smith of Mt. Prospect, IL; two sisters, Peggy Turentine and Freda (Doug) Andrews; sister-in-law, Pat Hill; six grandchildren, Ryne (Stephanie) Smith of Lincoln, NE, Colby Smith and Bryce Smith of Elgin, IA, Ty Smith, Caleb Smith and Emily Smith of Mt. Prospect, IL, as well as several nephews and a niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law, Henry Turentine and Ron Hill.
Burl earned his degree in chemical engineering from Samford University. He went on to work at Teepak as an engineer until his retirement after 24 years of service. He had belonged to the Jaycees in Alabama, was a member of the Bismarck Lions Club, and helped with Little League baseball. He was also a longtime member of the Northside Church of Christ where he served as an Elder, Deacon and Treasurer. Burl enjoyed gardening, chopping wood for his fireplace, Alabama football, and especially spending time with his family.
A service to celebrate the life of Burl Smith will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville. Jim Russell will officiate. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, October 3, also at Sunset in Danville. Memorials may be made to Northside Church of Christ in Bismarck or Carle Hospice.
