HUNTSVILLE – On Tuesday, February 27 Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-05) recognized the winner of the 2017 Congressional Art Competition for the 5th Congressional District in a special award ceremony at the Huntsville Museum of Art. The winner, Shelby Vaughn, won for her colored pencil entry entitled, “Joy.” Miss Vaughn is a senior at James Clemens High School and her artwork will hang in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol building, along with winners from congressional districts across the country. The winners of the Congressional Art Competition are all invited to attend a reception in Washington, D.C. in June.

Congressman Mo Brooks said, “I always look forward to partnering with the community to facilitate the annual Congressional Art Competition, which recognizes artistic achievement of high school students across Alabama’s Fifth Congressional District. The competition began in 1982 and, since then, more than 650,000high school students have participated. Their involvement would not be possible without the committed, high-caliber teachers and mentors who work to maintain and emphasize the value of art education in our communities and to our students.
“There were 224 entries for this year’s competition, and a panel of three judges selected the winner, Miss Shelby Vaughn of James Clemens High School. Miss Vaughn’s artwork will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol for one year, alongside winning submissions from other congressional districts. Congratulations to Shelby Vaughn and the five honorable mentions for their hard work and artistic vision. I was extremely impressed by the creativity showcased by each student who submitted artwork, and I am proud to be a part of this competition which recognizes and promotes artistic achievement in Alabama and across the nation.”
