Billy Wayne Sheffield, 75, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 17, 2024 at his home at Saltillo. Born on June 29, 1948, in Lee County, Billy Wayne was the cherished son of Preston and Lois Patterson Sheffield.
Billy Wayne’s life was marked by a profound sense of duty and honor. Drafted into the 4th Infantry Division, 1/22nd Infantry Delta Company 3rd Platoon, he served his country honorably and with valor. He, like many of his comrades, bore the burdens of Agent Orange exposure—sacrifices made for the nation he loved.
After his honorable discharge, Billy continued his life of service, albeit in a different capacity. For over 27 years, he served as the Custodial and Maintenance Supervisor at Itawamba Community College.
Beyond his professional life, Billy’s heart was firmly rooted in his family and faith. On June 14, 1985, he married the love of his life, Wanda. He was a member of East Heights Baptist Church.
A man of many interests, Billy Wayne found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether tending to his garden, working diligently in the yard, or spending time doting on his beloved grandchildren, he found joy in every moment. His enthusiasm for life inspired all who knew him, and his presence will be deeply missed by family, friends, and colleagues alike.
Billy Wayne leaves behind his wife of 39 years, Wanda Sheffield; three children, Rhonda Gay of Corinth, Michael Lumpkin of Ronda, North Carolina, and Tonia Elrod and her husband, Lee, of Conover, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Lindsey Ballinger, Dylan Gay, Logan Gay, Kelsey Carroll, Bryanna Courtney and her husband, Jamie, and Bailey Elrod; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and two brothers, Bobby Sheffield and his wife, Jeaniece, and Danny Sheffield and his wife, Kay.
