Billy Wayne “Pop” Daniel, age 89, passed away on June 1, 2022, at the North Mississippi Medical Center – Iuka. Born February 28, 1933, in Maud, Alabama, he was the son of Shelby H. and Effie Burns Daniel. He was a 1951 graduate of Cherokee High School where he was remembered for often hitting clutch shots in basketball games. In 1953, he graduated from Holmes Junior College in Goodman, MS. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1957 in a communications squadron. After serving in the military, he became an employee of Southern Bell Telephone Company in Birmingham, AL, where he worked for 37 years. After retiring from his managerial position in 1987 and moving to Iuka, he continued to work to some degree in communications. He always enjoyed helping friends and neighbors with needed repairs at their homes and businesses.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 5, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at Cutshall Funeral Home in Iuka followed by services at 2:00 p.m. with Bro. Art Gaines officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Iuka just after the services.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jackie Daniel; one son, David Lee Daniel of Birmingham, AL; one daughter-in-law Tiffany F. Daniel and one granddaughter Lauren Elizabeth Daniel, both of Birmingham, AL.
He is preceded in death by his two brothers, Sam and Roy Daniel; two sisters, Montez Edmondson and Ruth Rutledge; and his parents.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of his family and friends.
