Dr. Billy Ray Hicks, 82, passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2015.
The funeral service will be Friday, February 27 at 2:00 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. Burial will follow at 3:30, in Spruce Pine Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 1:00 p.m.
He was born February 24, 1933, in Spruce Pine, AL, the son of the late William Roy Hicks and Ruby Jane Hicks. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Hicks.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Ann Isbell Hicks, his daughter, Jane Hicks, three sons, John Hicks, Mark Hicks, and Randall Hicks, and three grandchildren, Claudia Hicks, Victoria Hicks, and Emma Hicks.
Bill attended Phil Campbell High School. He graduated from Florence State College (B.A.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Mississippi (Ph.D). He taught history and political science at Mississippi College from 1963 until his retirement in 1997.
He served his country in the Army from 1954 to 1956. He was a dedicated husband, father, and teacher. His numerous accomplishments as a scholar and professor spanned generations.
Despite his long battle with Parkinson’s disease, he remained true to his beliefs and outlook on life. Until the very end, he fought valiantly to be there for his loved ones.
He was beloved by his family, friends, and students. He leaves a legacy of extraordinary kindness and generosity. He inspired all who knew him to seek the good in life. By word and deed, he taught the virtues of love, duty, courage, and forgiveness.
