BIlly Gene Smith  Billy Gene Smith departed this life on April 21, 2024 after a brief illness at the age
of 85. Funeral will be Friday, April 26, 2024 at 12 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel
with Steve Smith officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. prior to the
service. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
Billy was born March 25, 1939 in Hanceville, AL to Malcolm D. Smith and Estelle
Terry Smith. He graduated from Austinville High School in 1957. Billy was a member of
the Plumbers and Pipefitters local union 760 for several decades. He was also a
licensed plumbing contractor and businessman later in his working life. He enjoyed a
lengthy and active retirement of over 20 years, filled with hunting, fishing, and going to
music and sporting events. He was also a regular at multiple bingo nights in Decatur.
Billy was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Clarice Louise Smith who
passed away in 2009. He is survived by son, Wesley G. Smith and wife, Cheryl, of
Madison; sisters, Betty Carden and Glenda Williams (Arville), both of Decatur;
granddaughter, Victoria (Tori) Gryder (Michael) of Monrovia; brothers-in-law, Bob Harpe
(Susan) and Kenneth Harpe (Betty), both of Decatur; and several nephews and nieces.
Pallbearers will be Randy Carden, Jeff Carden, Timmy Clemmons, Patrick
Fitzgerald, Michael Gryder, and Bob Harpe.
