Billy Don Jones, 87, of Decatur, died on Feb. 21, 2016 at 8:30 a.m. He was born in Prospect, Tennessee, and grew up in Pulaski, Tennessee. Mr. Jones graduated from Giles County High School. He attended Martin Methodist College and excelled at a high level on several sport teams. The National Guard was his next stop in his life where he commanded a tank. He then managed several merchandise stores and later joined the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a sergeant overseeing the flight line and maintenance on the aircraft to keep the planes flying.
He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Malcolm and Marion Jones and also his sister, Laura Anderson. His parents were Otis and Jimmie Lou Jones.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Betty Jones, whose marriage lasted 63 years; two sons, Don Jones (Allison) and Gary Jones; two grandsons, Brett Jones (Jessie) and Tyler Jones (Vanessa). Billy Jones was self-employed (Kleen Roof Co.) and retired at the age of 80. He was a life-long golfer and he had his share of good games and scores at Decatur Country Club. He enjoyed his friends and his social groups and the different places they traveled to. Mr. Jones was well known for his giving nature and his thoughtfulness for others. No one ever loved his wife, family and dog more than he. They created good memories with friends and family by going on cruises; boat trips in his boat and a lot of motor home trips. He was a big Alabama fan and traveled to many games over the years in his support of the Crimson Tide.
Graveside prayer for Billy Don Jones will be today, Feb. 23, 2016 at 2:15 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Randy Barnes, Alan Corley, Bill Brazier, Johnnie Lott, Joe Backe, Walter Wright, H.M. Nowlin and Carlton Moore. Honorary pallbearers are Jim Mynes and Bill Sexton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Decatur Animal Shelter, free care clinic or your favorite charity.
