Bill Sengewald passed away after a sudden illness and a two-month hospitalization at Huntsville Hospital Main and North Alabama Specialty Hospital. Bill’s family wishes to thank the staff of both hospitals for the care they gave to Bill and their kindness towards his wife, Susan.

Bill was born in Chicago IL, the oldest of four children born to Marcelle Ammons Sengewald and William Donald Sengewald, Sr. Shortly after graduating from Morris Community High School, Morris IL, Bill enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving in Viet Nam as a helicopter crew chief and gunner. After five years in the Marine Corps, Bill returned to civilian life for a short time, and then enlisted in the United States Air Force, completing 15 years of Air Force service, retiring from the military in 1986 as a 20-year military veteran.

In 1988 Bill began his civilian career with the Department of Defense, working with the Army helicopter programs in St. Louis MO at the United States Army Aviation and Troop Command (ATCOM). Bill met his wife Susan at ATCOM. They married and lived in St. Louis until the 1997 Base Realignment and Closure action (BRAC) moved both their jobs to Redstone Arsenal AL, where the aviation programs joined the missile programs to become the United States Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM). In 2011, Bill retired from AMCOM as a Logistics Management Specialist, finishing his post-military career with 23 years of civilian service.

Bill was very happy in retirement. He is dearly missed by family and friends.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Susan Sokoloff Sengewald of Madison AL; his son, Lawrence William Sengewald (Katie); grandson, Tyler William Sengewald, all of Williamsport PA; sister, Marcia Smith of Tampa FL; and his brother, Terry Sengewald (Ginny) of Effingham IL. Bill was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Mary Sengewald.

Shortly before his illness, Bill was heard to say that there were three things in his life that he was most proud of: his son, his grandson, and of being a United States Marine.

Semper Fi!
