Funeral for Bettye Sibley Murphree, 81, of Decatur will be Thursday, April 18, 2013, at 4 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Roger Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Murphree, who died Monday, April 15, 2013, at Crestwood Hospital, was born April 9, 1932, in Red Bay to Grady Cleere Sibley and Mavis Bell King Sibley. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Willard H. “Bud” Murphree. Bettye was raised in Mount Hope and graduated from Mount Hope High School. She attended Florence State University and worked as administrative assistant to District Judge Newton Powell until he retired. She then served as legal assistant to Judge David Breland in Decatur until she retired in 1998. Bettye was a member of First Baptist Church of Decatur, and was loved by all who knew or met her.
Survivors include one son, Dr. Steve Murphree (Denise) of Huntsville; one daughter, Donna McAlpin (Tim) of Florence; one sister, Doris Sibley Day of Moulton; and six grandchildren, Jon McAlpin, Andy McAlpin, Ben McAlpin, Stephanie Murphree, Stacie Murphree Tubb (Jordan) and Alli Murphree.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorials be made to Harborchase of Huntsville Assisted Living and Memory Care at 4801 Whitesport Circle SW Huntsville, AL 35801 or to First Baptist Church of Decatur 123 Church Street NE Decatur, AL 35601.
Pallbearers will be Jon McAlpin, Andy McAlpin, Ben McAlpin and Jordan Tubb.
