Betty Sanders lived a full and rewarding life with few regrets. Predeceased by her husband, James L. Sanders, and her son, James Kirk Sanders, she is survived by her faithful companion, Little Dog, and her children, Elizabeth Sanders Haymond (Gerry), Ellen Sanders Lee (David) and Lesa Sanders Kervin (Dan); grandchildren, Thomas Kirk Haymond (Junia), Sarah Rhea Kervin, Mitchell Edward Lee, James Nicholas Kervin and Christopher Byron Haymond; and two great-grandchildren, Sophie Alexandra Haymond and Jadon Logan Haymond.
A private family memorial will be held at Orange Beach, AL, time to be determined.
She started her career as a social worker assisting with adoptions and later got her Masters in Library Science. Enjoying working with children led her to be a librarian at Blossomwood Elementary where she shared her love of reading and poetry with the many children who were part of her school family.
I want no burial when I am dead,
No grave to hold my body, shattering
Slowly beneath the earth, unwanted
Where once it walked so proudly in the spring.
Burn it and throw the ashes to the wind
The wind may yet remember where to go
And it will search across the world and find
A hundred places that I used to know.
For epitaph say only “It’s over –
She loved the earth but she has gone away.
Some of her lies in summer clover
Some on the hilltop where the low clouds stray
And some are caught among the elms and firs
That once she foolishly believed were hers!”
