Betty Jean McCormick “Cindy” Roper, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away on Friday, August 2. She was 89. Ms. Roper was born in Crossville, Tennessee, and was number seven of eight children. She graduated from County High School in 1953 and later moved to Huntsville, Alabama, in 1961. She married Hollis Edward Roper on May 24, 1953.
From 1953 to 1965, Ms. Roper worked in fashion as both a buyer and in sales. Later, she worked for Huntsville City School System as a Substitute Teacher from 1973 to 2013.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bishop Arvil McCormick and Bertha Blanche Davenport McCormick; her husband, Hollis Edward Roper; and her brothers and sisters, Mary Jane Parham, Claudia Virginia Weisgarber, Mattie Anna Ragan, James Dewey (JD) McCormick, Margie Ivalee Vandergriff, and Joyce Marie Watson.
Ms. Roper is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Lee (Roper) Norton and husband Todd, and Sonya Lynne Roper. She is also survived by her brother, Orville Jerome (Junior) McCormick, of Manchester, TN.
Ms. Roper was a member of University Baptist Church from 1984 to 2015 and a member of West Huntsville Baptist Church from 2015 to 2024. She was known to have “adopted” countless numbers of daughters and sons. She was an integral part of the phone ministry, calling and checking on the church shut-ins, sick, and just to say “Hello, I am thinking about you and love you!”
Ms. Roper enjoyed working in her yard and taking care of her flowers.
A visitation and funeral service will be announced soon at West Huntsville Baptist Church. A graveside committal service will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at 10:30am at Rose Hill Memory Gardens in Manchester, Tennessee.
