Betty Jean Hogeland Sparkman, 93, of Decatur, Alabama passed away Thursday, June 6, 2024. Funeral
services will be Sunday, June 9th, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel, with brother Benny
Sivley officiating and Shelton Funeral Home directing. Visitation will also be Sunday, June 9th, starting at
1:00 PM at Shelton Funeral Home. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery following the service.
Jean was born June 6, 1931 to Jessie Nolan Hogeland and Goldie Bell Patterson Hogeland in Town Creek,
Alabama. She was the second of four children. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers,
William Skeggs Hogeland and Jessie Howard Hogeland and her sister, Hallie Hogeland Leemon Alderson.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Cecil Jaret Sparkman. She is survived by her
son, Jerry Nolan Sparkman and her grandson, Parker Nolan Sparkman (Shelby), and granddaughter,
Chandler Elyse Sparkman. Along with the titles, Momma and Granny, she was also known as Aunt Jean
to many nieces and nephews.
Jean was a faithful member of Moulton Heights Baptist Church now Decatur Baptist Church for nearly 70
years. She cherished every long-lasting friendship made there. She spent many years teaching Sunday
school, and in the later years enjoyed the fellowship of “Young at Heart”, and the literature ministry. She
loved celebrating birthdays and holidays and having any reason to get together. Her kind, generous, and
loving heart made her a blessing to all who knew her. Jean was a faithful Christian, an amazing cook, a
great friend, and found her greatest joy in her family. She will be dearly missed.
Pall bearers will be Randy Hogeland, Michael Hogeland, Daniel Beggs, Parker Sparkman, Bruce
Sparkman, and Larry Payne.
