Funeral service for Betty Foster Pointer Nettles, 91, of Decatur, will be held Saturday, June 6, 2015, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Decatur, with Dr. Rudy Guess and Reverend Sandra Locke-Godbey officiating and Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home directing. Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. in the church parlor.
Mrs. Nettles, who died Wednesday, June 3, was born in Decatur on September 7, 1923, to Mabel Hughes Pointer and Foster H. Pointer. She graduated from Riverside High School in Decatur and attended Alabama College in Montevallo. In 1946, she married Samuel Dubose Nettles.
A longtime member of First United Methodist Church, Mrs. Nettles taught Sunday school and served as president of United Methodist Women. She was a sustainer of the Junior League of Morgan County and was a charter member of Decatur Assembly.
Mrs. Nettles was preceded in death by her husband, parents and sisters, Marjorie Garner, Loudie Carey and Mabel (Sis) James.
Her survivors include her daughters, Betty Ann Nettles Mitchum (Don) and Barbara Earl Nettles Ashwander (Charles). She is also survived by four grandchildren, William Nettles Bronaugh (Jill), Beth Bronaugh Mattei (Peyton), Charles Walton Ashwander (Ashley) and William Samuel Ashwander (Caroline); and stepgrandson, Donald Craig Mitchum (Jamie).
Mrs. Nettles is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and nieces, Ann Harter, Carolyn Tweedy, Susan Anderson, Nancy Harrell, Kay Ivey and nephew, Ed James Jr.
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family appreciates the care and kindness expressed by the staff of Riverside Senior Living and Hospice of the Valley.
