Betty F. Hammond, 91, of Anderson, passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at her residence.
Visitation will be Friday, February 9th from 12 – 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Lexington. Funeral service will follow at the church with Jeff Cruse officiating. Burial will be in Pettus Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joel Usher, Brandon Carman, David Townsend, Will Townsend, Lance Hammond and Ethan Gibson.
Betty attended Anderson School and often reminisced about growing up in the Lauderdale County area with her siblings, all of which predeceased her. She married Wallace “Peter Rabbit” Hammond in 1949, and they raised their only child in Grassy, AL, surrounded by family. She adored her granddaughters and, later, her great-grandchildren. After her husband passed away in 2002, Betty persevered by making long lasting friendships through the Lexington Senior Center and the First Baptist Church in Lexington, AL. She took pride in maintaining her garden, growing beautiful flowers and loved to mow her grass. She was an exceptional wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend and will be greatly missed.
Betty Hammond is preceded in death by her mother and father, George & Dessie McCafferty, her siblings, Thoera Slaton, Hoyt McCafferty, Eroy McCafferty, Elizabeth Slaton and Janice Newbern, and her husband, Wallace “Peter Rabbit” Hammond. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy & Kenneth Jenkins, her granddaughters, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
