Betty was born on September 16, 1935 in Newtonville, Alabama to the late Carl and Mary Lee Black. Betty was the baby of the family of three children. She was the Salutatorian and Vice-President of the class of 1952 at Fayette County High School.

She began her professional career working at the First National Bank of Fayette, which later became Regions Bank. She became an officer of the bank and worked there for over forty years. She loved her job, but she especially loved working with her “bank girls”. They were a very close knit group, even after her retirement. In high school, Betty found her best friend, Bobby Bobo. Together they shared 77 years of friendship. They started working at the bank together and continued their friendship until this day. There was hardly ever a day when they didn’t see each other or talk on the phone.

Betty was a devoted member of Fayette First Baptist Church. She served as the treasurer of the church for many years. She loved her church and they loved her. She enjoyed visits with her pastor and many people who loved “Mrs. Betty”. She cherished her church family.

In 1985 she lost the love of her life, Lavoy C. Newman. She was an example of trusting God in the hardest of times. She gave special care to her girls, Carla and Robin. She loved nothing more than her one granddaughter and five grandsons. Later in her life, her four great grandchildren brought her so much joy.

The family is grateful to the staff at Morningview Estates for the love and care they gave “Mrs. Betty”. Each one of them were like family to her and she loved them dearly. We would like to thank Mary Frances Foster for always taking good care of her. We would also like to thank her physician, Dr, James Brian Wilhite for the excellent medical care and kindness he showed her. Faithful is the one word we would use to describe Betty Newman. She was faithful. Faithful to her family, faithful to her community, faithful to her church, but most of all she was faithful to her savior, Jesus Christ.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial donations are made to Fayette First Baptist Church, 432 Temple Avenue North, Fayette, Alabama 35555.
