Bertha E Hereford

Bertha E Hereford, 89, of Huntsville went to be with the Lord on August 18, 2023. Bertha was born on August 1, 1934, in Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated from Phillips High School and attended Samford University when it was Howard College. She finished her degree at Athens State in 1976 and taught history at Huntsville High School for a short period.

 

Bertha loved her family and friends and had a very generous spirit. She treasured her relationships. Bertha was a longtime member of Gurley United Methodist Church where she served as an Adult Sunday School teacher and as an active member of the Administrative Council. She was a Bible Study Fellowship leader for several years. Later, Bertha joined Central Presbyterian Church. Bertha was passionate about history and antiques, and she enjoyed serving on the Weeden House Board for many years. She was a member of Grace Club, the Antiquarian Society and the Study Circle.

Bertha was preceded in death by her beloved grandfather, Earl Cline; her mother, Judith Earline Cline Phillips; her first husband, Jerry Norton Smith; and her second husband, Bledsoe Dilworth Hereford.

Survivors include her daughter, Samantha Hereford Bentley (Trey); three grandchildren, Brett Hereford Maxey (Nate), Philip Wind Bentley IV (Tori) and Sarah Chase Bentley; and six great-grandchildren, Henley Maxey, Vance Maxey, Stanley Maxey, Braylee Maxey, Miller Maxey and Henry Maxey.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 24, at Maple Hill Cemetery with the Reverend Doctor Randall T Jenkins officiating. All are invited to the home of Samantha and Trey Bentley, where the family will receive friends following the service. Those concerned for the heat are welcome to the Bentley home at 10:30 in place of attending the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider donating to Central Presbyterian Church, 406 Randolph Avenue, Huntsville, Alabama 35801, or Gurley United Methodist Church, 121 College Street, Gurley, Alabama 35748.

The family would like to thank Demetria Walker and the ladies of A Helping Hand for all the love and care given to Bertha the last couple of years.
