Mr. Bernard Ivan “Ben” Bates, age 63, of Hollywood, Alabama passed away unexpectedly on June 4, 2024 at Parkridge Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tn.
Ben was born at home on May 18, 1961 in Fort Payne, Al to Edvald Dean Bates and Dorothy Jean Bates. He was an avid Alabama Fan and tried to never miss a game. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, kayaking, and spending all the time he could with his loving and devoted wife, Laurie.

Ben had heart problems most of his life but never let that hold him back. For years he worked as a land surveyor and said it was saving his life. For the last nine years he worked as a safety coordinator and auto cad designer at Accel Fire and Alarm Systems for his lifelong friend, Lee Gregory. He was a fixer upper and good at fixing just about anything. If he didn’t know how to fix something, he would use the internet to his advantage and learn how to fix it.

Ben and Laurie attended North Alabama Community College. He began in 2009 and she began in 2010. They graduated together in 2014. For the last year they both attended Faith Covenant Church of God in Scottsboro, Al. Ben and Laurie have lived in Hollywood since 2019, but have shared 28 unforgettable years together since 1995. They were married May 10, 1997 in Lakeland, Florida.

He is survived by his wife, Laurie Lynn Bates; mother, Dorothy Jean (Rose) Bates; sister, Tammy Laverne Cisco; brothers, Dennis Kevin Bates (Rebecca) and Terry Dean Bates; daughter, Ketti Johnson; step son, Wesley Jerod Register; step daughters, April Lynn Hefner and Megan Elizabeth Maze (Rick); grandchildren, Bryant, Grace, Connor, Kellan, Kaylee and Jaxson.
He was preceded in death by his Father, Edvald Dean Bates; brothers, Chris Odell Warren and Dennis Lee Bates; granddaughter, Anastasia Elizabeth Hefner.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Scottsboro Funeral Home with Rev. Brett Hogland officiating. Burial will follow at Pinehaven Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Scottsboro Funeral Home.
