Berford “BJ” Joe Sam Strickland of Huntsville, AL passed away on August 17, 2024, at the age
of 96. Born on October 7, 1927, in Shinbone, AL to Vera and Ervin Strickland, BJ was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. A life-long disciple of Christ and preacher, his mission was to share the gospel with those he encountered.
On March 10, 1952, BJ married Mary Frances Mercer. They were blessed with 72 years of marriage before his passing. With Christ at the center of their life, their marriage has been a model for their children and grandchildren to aspire to.
Mr. Strickland was a manager with Winn-Dixie for nearly 30 years. Prior to his retirement, he was promoted to district manager and placed in charge of 39 supermarkets, managing the stores in the Montgomery and Atlanta divisions. After retiring from Winn-Dixie, Mr. Strickland became licensed to sell insurance and real estate and enjoyed that work for many years.
While accomplished in business, Mr. Strickland’s greatest calling in life was to preach the Word of God. From the time he was a young man, if a church was in need of a song leader, guest speaker, or an interim preacher, he would fill that role until a replacement was found. After serving as an elder at Mayfair Church of Christ for 23 years, BJ saw a need for those unable to attend church service at regular worship times. With his wife by his side and the support of Mayfair, he began the 6 a.m. Sunday worship service. For more than 47 years, Mr. Strickland faithfully led that worship service.
BJ was a blessing to many throughout his life. He was eager to lend a hand and believed he could never go wrong in helping others. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, honor, humbleness, kindness, compassion, and love.
Mr. Strickland was preceded in death by his parents, Vera and Ervin Strickland; his son, Joe Strickland; and sister, Juanita Mitchell. Survivors include his wife, Fran; their son, David; six grandchildren, Hope (Cody), Hannah (Jackson), Sarah (Bruce), Joe Jr., and Joshua; great-grandchildren, Owen, Kathryn, and Sullivan Wilhite; and his sister, Bobbie (Gary) Bradley.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 26 at Mayfair Church of Christ in Huntsville, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., with the funeral service immediately following the visitation. A private burial will take place at Maple Hill Cemetery.
Flowers and/or memorial contributions to the Mayfair Church of Christ Missions ministry are equally welcome.
