MONTGOMERY- Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded a $28,480 grant to install lighting and additional benches to the Town Creek Park walking trail.

The trail surrounds Town Creek Park and is used extensively by walkers and joggers. Residents will be able to use the trail after sunset once the new lights are installed.

“Alabamians who work during the day need a place to exercise safely at a time that is more convenient,” Bentley said. “This project is a way to expand recreational opportunities for Town Creek residents.”

Four new benches along the fully accessible walking path will provide resting points for those who cannot complete the one-mile trail in a single stretch or who need a break while making multiple round trips.

Other recreational activities at the park include ball fields, a playground and a pavilion. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the Federal Highway Administration’s Recreational Trails Program. ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, workforce development, water resource management and recreation development.

Bentley notified Mayor Mike Parker the grant had been approved. Town Creek is committing $7,120 in matching funds to the project.
