A memorial service for Basil Ford Wear Jr., 93, of Decatur will be Thursday, April 16, 2015, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church Stephenson Chapel with Jack Lovelace officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends after the memorial service in the Heritage Room.
Mr. Wear, who died April 14, 2015, at Summerford Nursing Home, was born May 5, 1921, to Basil Ford Wear Sr. and Wilma Luna Pickens Wear. He was a lifelong resident of Decatur and practiced as a Certified Public Accountant in the firm of Wear, Howell, Strickland, Quinn & Law from 1960 until his retirement.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Decatur, having served on the Board of Deacons, as treasurer, Sunday school teacher and on numerous committees over the years of his membership. Other past community services included various officer positions in the Decatur Junior Chamber of Commerce; Treasurer of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce; member of the Board of Directors of Compass Bank and SouthTrust Bank; and member of the Board of Trustees of Decatur General Hospital Foundation. Professional positions included member of Council of Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants, receiving a lifetime membership in 1995 and the Society’s Public Service Award in 1996; Forty Year Honorary membership in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants; First President and Charter member of the Wheeler Basin Chapter of the Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants; and Member and Chairman of the Alabama State Board of Public Accountancy.
Mr. Wear was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Doris K. Wear, his parents and three sisters.
He is survived by his two daughters, Pat Crowe (Horace) of Decatur, and Pegi Wyatt (Jim) of Birmingham; five grandchildren, Leslie Tomlinson (David), of Florence, Alex Wyatt (Megan), of Birmingham, Rebecca Bibb (Sloane), of Decatur, McDaniel Wyatt, of New York City, NY, and Virginia Baggs (Robin), of Atlanta; seven great-grandchildren, Ford, Eloise and Henry Tomlinson, of Florence, Riordan and Ander Wyatt, of Birmingham, Colwell and Frances Bibb, of Decatur, and Basil Baggs, of Atlanta; two sisters, Sara Frances Brennamen, of Birmingham, and Betty Jo Landers, of Decatur.
