SHEFFIELD-Two Northwest-Shoals Community College students were recognized as recipients of the 2019 Edward Fennel Mauldin Endowed Scholarship at a reception on October 18 hosted in their honor by representatives from Bank Independent and NWSCC.

This year’s scholarship recipients are returning student Austin Green, and first-time recipient Kaylee Smith.  The Edward Fennel Mauldin Endowed Scholarship is awarded to qualified, first-generation college students, based on financial need and residency within the seven counties served by Bank Independent.  There are two endowed scholarships dedicated to serve Northwest-Shoals Community College.

Bank Independent President Macke Mauldin congratulated Green and Smith on their achievements. Mauldin explained that the inspiration for the scholarship was his father, the late Edward F. Mauldin.  Although his father never graduated from college, the late Mr. Mauldin professed a deep appreciation for education and the value of college experience itself.  Bank Independent established the scholarship to honor the legacy of Mr. Mauldin’s

love of learning.

According to Northwest-Shoals Community College President Dr. Glenda Colagross, the investment Bank Independent is making in students will positively impact the community for years to come. “I know first-hand what a scholarship of this magnitude means to first-generation college students,” stated Colagross. “The Edward Fennel Mauldin Memorial Scholarship is giving students an opportunity to achieve their educational goals and making a tremendous impact on their lives. Northwest-Shoals is extremely grateful to Bank Independent for making this possible for our students.”

Referencing the Bank’s mission to make a positive difference in people’s lives, Mauldin emphasized, “You have the support of all 618 of our team members.  Our challenge to you today is to pay this forward. Remember what has been done for you and pass that kindness along to others.”

The two scholarships at Northwest-Shoals are the ninth and tenth Edward Fennel Mauldin Memorial Endowed Scholarships. Six scholarships are awarded each fall to University of North Alabama students, and two to students at Athens State University.
