TUSCUMBIA – Greg Aziz, wanted in Alabama for alleged crimes in connection with funding of the National Railcar plant in Barton, has been delivered in handcuffs this afternoon to the Colbert County Jail. Aziz was arrested in Chicago last week by United States Securities and Exchange Agents while he was visiting for a trade conference.
He is expected to be brought before Circuit Jackie Hatcher tomorrow of Thursday for a preliminary hearing. At that time, the charges, 10 felonies, will be read to Aziz. It is not certain what will be the outcome of his expected request for bail. In cases where well-heeled foreign nationals are charged with felonies, appearance bonds pose a tricky problem. According to an informed source at Colbert County Courthouse, it is not likely that Aziz will be allowed to post a bond at the time of his preliminary hearing.
