Avis Potter Taylor Profile PhotoAvis Potter Taylor, age 96, of Madison, Alabama passed away Saturday, October 14, 2023. She was born on May 12, 1927, in Huntsville, Alabama to Leroy and Annie Potter.

Growing up, she was a cheerleader and voted “Most Popular Girl” of her senior class. She graduated from New Hope High School in 1946 and married her high school sweetheart, Eugene Taylor, who was the star of the basketball team. They were married for 59 years until his passing in 2005.

Through the years, she was a wonderful Christian wife, mother, and homemaker known for her famous southern cooking, knitting, sewing, and crocheting. She loved the Atlanta Braves baseball team, playing cards with her friends at the Villas, singing in the choir at First Baptist Church – New Hope, and teaching 2nd graders about her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Many will always remember Avis as the petite lady with the beautiful blue eyes, white “crown of glory” hair, and enduring personality assisting customers at Kagg’s Bargain Corner, Bill’s Dollar Store, or Piggly Wiggly of New Hope. Very few will remember her working in downtown Huntsville as a teenager at the Bootery. But she never forgot and always reminisced of those days during a trip downtown.

Avis is survived by her children Dennis Taylor (Sandra) of Martin, TN, Nathan Taylor of Orlando, FL, Jeff Taylor (Cynthia) of Grant, AL, and Mary Griffith (Jim) of Madison, AL; her sister Martha Potter Heiden of San Marcos, CA; her sister-in-law Clara Taylor Rogers of Huntsville, AL; her three grandsons Chris Taylor, Joe Taylor, and Ty Taylor; her three granddaughters Elizabeth Lomax, Caitlin Griffith, and Taylor Griffith; her nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home from 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. with a graveside service following at Huntsville Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the children’s and youth ministries of First Baptist Church of New Hope, Alabama (fbcnewhope.org) or Trinity Baptist Church of Madison, Alabama (trinitymadison.com).
