ELKMONT-A $200,000 grant awarded by Governor Robert Bentley will help a Limestone County business expand and hire 25 full-time employees. In addition, the company expects the area to benefit from as many as 35 new indirect support jobs because of its expansion.
The Community Development Block Grant, awarded to the town of Elkmont, will fund infrastructure improvements required for Aviagen Broiler Breeders to begin an $8 million renovation at two hatchery sites in Elkmont. Aviagen is a global poultry science business with corporate headquarters in Huntsville.
“My administration is committed to providing jobs and helping Alabama grow and prosper,” Bentley said. “By helping a growing business fulfill its plans, this grant will bring needed jobs and other benefits for the residents of Elkmont and Limestone County.”
Elkmont will combine the grant with $237,075 supplied by Aviagen to provide public sewer services for the business, which is currently on a septic waste disposal system. The Limestone County Water and Sewer Authority will install a new pump station and 4,250 feet of sewer line to connect the business. The expanded service will be an asset the town may use to attract other businesses and to support overall development of the area.
Bentley notified Mayor Tracy Compton that the grant had been approved.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy, water resources, job training and career development.
