ATHENS – Athens State University’s College of Education hosted their 3rd annual We TEACH Conference on December 7. The event provided an opportunity for high school students to learn more about teaching as a possible career and profession. Nearly 200 students from various school systems around the state attended the daylong meeting.
Athens State University President Bob Glenn welcomed attendees to the event that consisted of three break-out sessions facilitated by local P-12 educators and Athens State faculty. Students were also given a campus tour. Lunch was provided and a prize giveaway period ended the event.
The conference highlighted three featured speakers. Hartselle Superintendent Vic Wilson, voted Alabama/Classworks 2017 Superintendent of the Year, delivered the keynote address. Wilson’s speech was entitled: 3R’s of Leadership – Rigor, Relevance, Relationships. He addressed the importance of building strong relationships with rigorous and relevant processes at all levels of an organization. Specifically discussed were the 3 R’s as they pertain to teaching.
Richard Reynolds, Executive Director and Principal of Huntsville Achievement School, presented a TED Talk entitled How Does a Teacher Rock When Things Get Rocky?
Athens City School Superintendent Trey Holladay presented Being a Rock-Star in a New Educational World. His topic focused on leadership and cutting edge practices seen in Athens City Schools.
During the luncheon, Outstanding Athens State University College of Education alumni were recognized for their dedication to students. Each honoree was presented a plaque. Those honored were Anna Anderson, Kelli McLemore, and Amanda Stidham.
The 4th Annual We TEACH Conference is slated for December 2017.
