ATHENS – The Ballroom of the Sandridge Student Center at Athens State University was the setting for the Spring Initiation Ceremony of the University’s Alpha Iota Chapter of Delta Mu Delta on April 19, 2015.
The academic society inducted 68 new and two honorary members into the nationally chartered organization. The chapter faculty advisers are Professors Kim Bell and Kim Roberts. “We congratulate our inductees on their membership into this prestigious honor society,” states Professor Kim Bell. “Their recognition is well-deserved as they rank among the top 20% of their junior and senior classes.”
This year, Delta Mu Delta awarded awards in the following categories: The Excellence in Teaching Award to Professor Scott Cox, the Medallion Award was awarded to Melody Flowers, and the Outstanding Service Award to Dr. Michael Essary. A Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Dr. Robert Burkhardt. The Robert L. and Mildred S. McCall Scholarship was awarded to Rochelle St. Amand. Honorary members inducted included Dr. Lisa Rich and Dr. Rick Roberts.
During the ceremony, the organization also recognized the Leslie Essary Distinguished Delta Mu Delta scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving Athens State student over the coming year in memory of Leslie Essary, thanks to the generosity of her father Dr. Mike Essary, Associate Professor of Management of Technology.
Delta Mu Delta was founded at New York University in 1913 to recognize and reward superior scholastic achievement of students with concentrations in Business Administration. The Athens State chapter was originally formed in 1970 with Professor Gene Ermert being its inaugural faculty adviser. The chapter has grown to be one of the largest and most active chapters within the national organization. The Athens State chapter was the recipient of the 2014 Star Chapter Award and is recognized as the most award-winning chapter with 13 annual recognitions.
