ATHENS – Athens State University and the City of Athens are partnering to present an Intercultural Seminar on Monday, February 22 and Tuesday, February 23. The Seminar will feature author and radio host Dr. Thomas Connell who is known internationally as Dr. Culture. The event will be held in the Ballroom of the Sandridge Student Center on the Athens State campus. It is free and open to the public.
Connell is an internationally recognized expert and speaker on cross-cultural communications, cultural diversity, and business communication. He is the winner of several awards including the Public Relations Society of America Silver Anvil Award and two-time winner of the Thomas Jefferson Award. He has appeared in nearly all of the main U.S. media outlets and the BBC.

“This is an excellent opportunity for Athens State to partner with the City of Athens to present an expert in the field of cross-cultural awareness,” said Athens State President Bob Glenn. “As our world becomes more globally diverse, we need to learn about other cultures and how they adapt within our communities. I am pleased that we are able to host Dr. Culture on our campus and to hear his message of international perspective.”
The seminar will cover three separate aspects that deal with cultural competency: a general seminar, one specifically designed for first responders, and one tailored to the needs of teachers and school administrators.
“Six Simple Steps to Cultural Competency” is a general overview of embracing cultural diversity. It will be offered on Monday, February 22 and Tuesday, February 23 at 9 a.m. This two-hour lecture with Q&A is designed for general audiences.
On Monday, February 22 at 1 p.m. Connell will speak on “Cultural Competency for First Responders.” The two-hour lecture and Q&A is designed for emergency, police, and fire professionals, but is open to the public as well.
“Cultural Competency for Teachers and School Administrators” is offered as an evening lecture from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and is designed for area teachers and administrators. As with all lectures for this seminar, the public is invited to attend any or all sessions.
