ATHENS-Two Cases of note from Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson. On Sunday, August 20 Attempted Robbery with Shots Fired and on Friday, August 18 asuspect was charged with Receiving Stolen Property 1st:
“Yesterday morning shortly after 11:00 the police department received a 911 call about an attempted robbery and shorts fired in the 400 block of Cloverleaf Drive. When Officer Joe Kimery arrived he talked with the victim’s in the front yard. The victim’s told Kimery they had advertised a diamond ring for sale on Craig’s List on Saturday. Then on Sunday morning a black male rang the doorbell. When they answered the door he asks directions to Belmont Street. The victim’s told him they didn’t know where the street was located. He then asked to use their phone and they told him no. He then asks for a pen and a piece of paper. The victims told him they couldn’t help him. The male then pulled a pistol from his front pocket and told the victims to give him the ring. The victims then started trying to get the door shut locked. The male then fired one shot at them before they could get the door closed. In total three shots were fired in the area of the door. The suspect then left on foot. No one was hit and there were no injuries.
While officer Kimery was in the yard the suspect drove by the residence. Kimery advised other cars in the area of the situation and the description of the vehicle. Officer Bobby Hand and other units were less than a block away and located the suspect and vehicle. Hand attempted to stop the car but the driver would not stop. A vehicle pursuit was started on Cloverleaf Drive. The pursuit ended on Hwy 72 East in front of Sports Med when the suspect lost control of the car he was driving left the roadway and struck a utility pole. The suspect then ran from the scene. Officer Hand apprehended the suspect a short time later on Nichols Drive. The accident caused the pole to break; Athens Utilities had to temporally cut power in the area to replace the pole.
The suspect was later identified as Xavier Tavaris Young, 25 from Huntsville. Young has been charged with robbery first degree, shooting into an occupied dwelling and attempting to elude a police officer. Young was booked at the police department and transferred to the county jail.
In this case the victims sent a copy of an appraisal to the suspect which contained the victims address. The
victim did tell investigator Mickey Hart they had made arrangements to sell the ring on Saturday to a person and were meeting them at a store in public however the person never showed up. At this time were not sure if Young is the same person they were going to meet or not. It is my advice to anyone using the internet to buy sell or trade items to meet in public or at a law enforcement department. The investigation into this case is continuing.
Friday night Officer Mac McWhorter saw a GMC truck with an expired tag on US 31 near Hobbs Street. McWhorter checked the registration for the tag and it came back to a Jeep. Officer Roger Martin then checked the vehicle identification number and it came back stolen from Tulsa OK. David Shannon Burrell was arrested for receiving stolen property first degree. Burrell was transported to the police department where he was booked and later transferred to the county jail.”
