ATFWASHINGTON – The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) released the Annual Firearms Manufacturers and Export Report (AFMER). The report contains information about the production of manufacturing and export activity from all federally licensed manufacturers of firearms and destructive devices.

Under federal law, manufacturers are required to submit a production report to ATF by April 1 of each year. The report includes data with a one year delay to comply with the Trade Secrets Act. For example, the January 2014 data release will cover calendar year 2012 activity.

In response to requests from the industry, ATF released interim AFMER data for the first time in July 2010. This original release included aggregate data only and did not identify any specific industry member, to comply with the Trade Secrets Act. Today’s annual report is more comprehensive and breaks down the origin of all U.S. manufactured firearms.

ATF continuously develops and strengthens its collaborative efforts with members of the firearms industry and consumers through education and outreach to prevent the diversion of firearms through illegal markets. This report is an important tool in that effort.
