Ashley West Pickens – Obituary

ashley-west-pickens-1478280920Ashley West Pickens was born November 29, 1980 in Jackson, TN the daughter of Houston West and the late Paulette Hunter West.

She was united in marriage to Andy Pickens on April 21, 2001.

Ashley was not your average homemaker, she took great pride in caring for her home and family. She was the interior designer of their home, the gardener of vegetables, the landscaper, the groomer of the lawn even her neighbors, and her green thumb was the size of the Hulk’s. She was taught to sew, monogram and reupholster furniture by her paternal grandmother, Bessie West. She put her skills to use sewing purses and selling them. Her love of life extended to the great outdoors. She enjoyed hunting deer, birds including pesky crows, bobcats and other wildlife. She was a huge fan of the University of Alabama football and enjoyed attending games in Tuscaloosa. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church in Selmer.

Faith, fur babies, family and friends were most important to Ashley. Her greatest joy was being a mom to Rachel and Mason. She loved watching Rachel play ball and Mason try to build or create the next biggest invention.

Ashley was a modern day “Super Hero.” She never complained but instead embraced everyday with her beautiful smile. In the words of another super hero, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles,” the late Christopher Reeve.

Ashley West Pickens departed this life on November 4, 2016 in Selmer, Tennessee at the age of 35 Years, 11 Months, 6 Days. She is survived by her husband, Andy Pickens of Selmer, TN; their children, Rachel and Mason Pickens; father, Houston West and wife, Pam of Selmer, TN; sister, Tracy Keeton and husband Mickey of Crump, TN; stepsister, Savanah Matlock and husband Bj of Selmer, TN; father and mother-in-law, Paul and Brenda Pickens of Bethel Springs, TN; grandparents, Buddy and Maryann Pope of Selmer, TN; special friend, Beth Dennie of Bethel Springs, TN; and a host of extended family, an army of friends and warriors.

In addition to her mother, Ashley was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Marshall and Imogene Hunter; paternal grandparents, James and Bessie West.
