TUSCUMBIA-The Tennessee Valley Museum of Art is accepting applications for ArtQuest, an adventure in art for young people interested in small-group art instruction that will improve skills and cultivate creativity. Sessions will be held at the art museum, 511 N. Water St., Tuscumbia.
Classes for students entering grades 3-4 and grades 5-6 are scheduled July 9 through 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A three-day class for students entering grades 7–12 will be conducted July 9-11 from 10 a.m. – noon.
Art projects for student entering grades 3-4 and grades 5-6 include activities geared to each age group. Barb
Hendricks’s Experiments in Art will incorporate materials such as clay, cardboard, yarn and found objects into printmaking, as well as lessons in color theory. The class culminates with a monochromatic still life project. In Bitsy Kingsley’s Meet the Masters class, students will create works of art in the styles of the Old Masters and study the lives and art of artists such as Michelangelo, da Vinci, Rembrandt and others. Students in Provie Musso’s Funky Folk Art class will use found objects, paint and fabric to create assemblages, garden art and more.
And with Pam Wright, students will study and apply a range of
techniques for working with color.
Students entering grades 7 – 12 will study Still Life and Value with Martha Carpenter. This course is a review of basic academic drawing and includes the study of value, composition and hand-eye coordination. Participants will use charcoal and pastel to create a still life and learn to use a grid to draw portraits.
Hendricks is a life-long educator with a passion for art, having taught every age group from kindergarten through college. Kingsley is a watercolor artist and teacher who has been an instructor in art camps for years. Musso is an assemblage and collage artist with 35 years of art education experience. Wright is an artist working in paint and color pencil, among other mediums, with 20 years of art education experience.
Martha Carpenter is a nationally recognized professional portrait artist whose career includes private and corporate portrait commissions. Her work is marketed nationwide through galleries, agencies and private exhibitions and her paintings have been exhibited at the Centre International D’Art Contemporain in Paris, among others.
Tuition for the four-day class is $195 and $165 for TVAA Family/Friend members and above. Tuition for the three-day class is $125 and $100 for TVAA Family/Friend members and above. All materials are provided.
